The Corporate Resource Cell of Rai University organized a visit to Mafatlal Industries with a vision to help the students to understand and “spin a new way” to success. The students of B.Tech Mechanical Semester IV and Diploma Semester VI were the prime beneficiaries of this visit.
The story of the Mafatlal Group is a stirring saga of a blend of traditional values and modern technology triumphing over circumstances. Mr. Mafatlal Gagalbhai the founder was born in 1873, to a weaver of Ahmedabad. His father, who was neither educated nor prosperous, made a living by doing odd jobs. It wasn’t long before a young Mafatlal, who was still in his early teens, had to leave school to help his father peddle textile products.. The Group also diversified into Information Technology, Chemicals and the Engineering Industry. The late 1980’s saw the Group further diversifying into the Financial Service Industry, Gas Distribution and later into Healthcare business.
The objective of this visit was to help the students to understand the overview of the working of a Thermal Power Plant, the overview of control system and the basics of the working of a boiler.
The students were first briefed about basic knowledge fact like “half of the electricity generated in the world is by using coal as the primary fuel”.
The function of the coal fired thermal power plant is to convert the energy available in the coal to Electricity. Students were briefed about Mafatlal’s Coal power plants work by using several steps to convert stored energy in coal to usable electricity that is used by manufacturing industries for production activities for products.
The students were subsequently taken for an outside view of the control room of the Manufacturing Facility and shown the way a boiler operates, given information about its importance in running the steam turbines. The students were also educated about critical areas while operating a boiler and reasons for bursting of a boiler due to operator mistakes and mishandling
The visit greatly encouraged the students to think over a career in the engineering section of thermal power technology as a thermal engineering professional.
