The Corporate Resource Cell of Rai University organized a visit to Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station – KLTPS with a vision to provide students a practical perspective of Energy generation Segment. The students of B. Tech Electrical Semester IV, B.Tech Electronics and Communication Semester VI and Diploma Electrical Semester VI were the prime beneficiaries of this visit.
The objective was to provide opportunity to the students about total engineering from concept to commissioning which include planning, engineering, procurement, project management, inspection & expediting, supervision of construction & commissioning and post commissioning advisory services. The objective also included to provide opportunity to learn practically through interaction, working methods and employment practices.
Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station is located on the Kutch District, Gujarat. The plant is located near Panandhro village in Lakhpat taluka. The plant is adjacent of Lignite mines (operated by Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation) and receives lignite direct from the mines. There are four units presently in operation. KLTPS Unit-4 has the CFBC boiler which is first time introduced in GSECL. The installed capacity is given below: Unit – 1 70 MW Unit – 2 70 MW, Unit – 3 75 MW & Unit – 2 75 MW.
The aim of visit to KLTPS was to make the students understand power generation through thermal energy produced from coal. The students were first briefed about how they get coal from Lignite coal mines and how it is then used to generate power. Collected coal is refined and grinded to fine particles and then used to generate steam in boiler by burning it. The generated steam is inputted to generators and thus power generates.
Students were led to control unit and an electrical engineer briefed them about how all the parameters are controlled and Unit is managed to generate electricity. In addition to the topic, he also focused on trading and distribution of power to all over the Gujarat. He also demonstrated how software is used to manage and control the parameters of power generation. There were: Coal feeding, Boiler, generator and water purification like sections.
At last, the Coordinator gave some basic information that how they can apply for job over KLTPS through Employment Registration.
The visit greatly encouraged the students as they knew how an engineer can use his skills to the industries to benefit society and self. It is rightly said that “See & know’ is better than ‘read & learn’. Students got real feel of company’s working after this visit. They got a chance to transfer their theoretical knowledge to practical implication. All in all, it was a fruitful visit.
