Industry Visit – The Institute of Seismological Research – 26th July, 2018

                             A Visit was organized on 26th July 2018 at Institute of Seismological Research by Civil department, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Rai University.
                            The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) has been established by the Science and Technology Department, Government of Gujarat vide Government Resolution No. ISR-2003-687-DST dated August 27, 2003. The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) under the Science and Technology Department, Government of Gujarat is functioning from 2006. ISR is the only institute in India, fully dedicated to seismological research and is planned to be developed into a premier international institute in few years time.
                             The students were divided into two groups. A Visit started with the Geotechnical Lab where some kind of soil testing was held regarding earthquake then afterward the scientist of seismological department gave some information regarding earthquake zones of Gujarat and India. The zone is divided into four part like zone 2, zone 3, zone 4 , zone 5 & zone 5 is considered as most sensitive zone. They gave information about earthquake of Kutch which is located in zone 5 & also gave Information about Some Devastating Earthquake of Gujarat as well as world. They taught us about some new & old Equipment. New equipment records wave in some few second which work on the principle of Electromagnetic induction process. Generally instrument has three components which generate wave which have vertical wave & horizontal wave. They considered p & s wave to explain the thinks easily. What they said when earthquake occur energy released & some amount of amplitude generated which we can seen on screen. After that Students asked regarding earthquake prediction. Than after they explain about earthquake prediction which is the branch of the science of seismology concerned with the specification of the time, location & magnitude of future earthquake within stated limits & particularly. If we predict, it will occur after 40 to 50 years but not always sure.
                            Then after we moved to OSL lab, Where They informed about ‘OSL’ method which is optically stimulated luminescence. A method of measuring does from ionizing radiation, which is after used in minerals dating. The method makes use of electrons trapped between the valence & conduction band in the crystalline structure of certain minerals like quartz. The trapping sites are imperfection of the lattice impurities or defect. The ionizing radiations produce electron hole pair. Electrons are in the conduction band & holes in the valence band. The electrons that have been excited to the conduction band may become entrapped in the electron may free themselves from the trap & get into the conduction band. From the conduction and they may recombine with holes trapped in hole trap & a luminescence centre emission of light will occur. The photons are detected using a photo multiplier tube. The signal from the tube is then used to calculate the dose that the material had absorbed.
                             At the end they shown some kind of film regarding their seismological centre & earthquake occur in 2001 in Gujarat & ‘ISR’ is the best place for gathering information regarding earthquake.
                            The students and all the staff members have enjoyed the technical Endeavour. The organization also appreciated our students after the question answer sessions. Visit seems to be very informative and gives good learning experience.
